ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY
Not all therapy is what you think…
When you think of therapy, do you think of lying on a couch and talking about your childhood?
Well, that’s what they do in the movies! And it works in the movies!
It can be a little more tricky and take a bit longer in real life. In the past thirty years we’ve learned a lot more about what types of therapy can lead to the quickest, most long lasting change.
Panorama Therapy & ACT
When you start individual therapy through Panorama Therapy we may talk some about your past, in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) we’re more focused on what changes you can make now for a better future.
It’s scary to open yourself to experiencing uncomfortable emotions like anxiety.
In ACT, we’ll look at your fears, barriers, and values.
We'll WELCOME uncomfortable emotions, together.
We'll learn to accept reactions instead of trying to get rid of rough or uncomfortable feelings.
We do A LOT of mindfulness to help you be present with these unwanted emotions. It is hard to believe, but when you sit with the feeling you want to avoid, the feelings lose power over you.
I’ll guide you through exercises and be there with you. This is the Acceptance part of ACT.
We’ll help you uncover the values that drive your life.
During the later parts of ACT, we develop a map for your life so that your behavior is consistent with your values.
This is the Commitment part of ACT – a life plan where your behavior feels comfortable because it is consistent with what you value.
So Commitment? Is this a legal term?
Not at all. You will work on committing to behavior that is based on your own values. When your actions feel “right,” you’re most likely tapping into your core values.
Values can be related to spiritual beliefs, but everyone’s core values are slightly different. They’re the driving forces for you best life.
Over eight sessions, we’ll create a plan based on your own values to get you closer to your ideal life.
And if you want to lie on your couch, go ahead! Get Comfortable!
